Literacy on Mondays

Term one

Week One

Here are the 8 most popular (or rather hated!) common errors we will focus on this year. As will be revealed in staff meeting, we will be starting with “alot”.
We are begginning with a competition to get studrnts to design an "alot."

Week Two
Keep pushing the “alot” competition. Flyer attached in case you need more. Due
tomorrow. Can be handed in to the Student Centre or direct to me.

Ideas for reinforcing this…
N Explain that “lot” is a noun -> like table the indefinite article “a” is a separate word i.e. a lot, a table (thanks Rachel)
N Explain that it is no different from “a little” (thanks Val)
N Led me to thinking this would be an excellent opportunity to explain the difference between “a lot” and “the lot” – particularly to ESOL students whose first language does not have articles
N Put it on a spelling word list (thanks Chloe)
N Meantime Gareth has come up with a .poster to cover all the common errors. Please find attached
Remember, this is not meant to be a one week wonder, to be effective across the whole school, we all need to keep focussing on this for half the term.
